Human contribution remains central to copyrightability.
The U.S. Copyright Office says generative-AI output can receive copyright protection only where a human author has determined sufficient expressive elements. AI may assist a human creative process without disqualifying the resulting work, but prompts alone do not make the user the author of the output.
NIST describes provenance—information about where digital content came from and how it changed—as one useful form of transparency. It can help people understand origin and history, but it cannot guarantee that content is accurate, trustworthy, or presented in context.
